“The Sitting Machine” is a charming documentary that follows eight public school children and their teacher as they venture beyond standardized tests into a world of learning by doing. The film was produced by local filmmakers Paul Hunt, Julie Kauffman, and Jerry Greiner. The local premiere is Sunday September 13th, at Penn Cinema, at 2pm and 7pm. The filmmakers, students and teacher in the film will hold a Q&A session at both screenings on Sunday Sept. 13th.
Please contact producer Jerry Greiner at jerrygreiner@paonline.com, for more information.

I don’t know if either of these films will make it into our market. If they do I’ll be there, if they don’t I’ll drive to see them.
ADAM
Adam is a handsome but intriguing young man who has all his life led a sheltered existence — until he meets his new neighbor, Beth, a beautiful, cosmopolitan young woman who pulls him into the outside world, with funny, touching and entirely unexpected results. Their implausible and enigmatic relationship reveals just how far two people from different realities can stretch in search of an extraordinary connection. (via imdb.com)9
9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 (Elijah Wood), who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive. The conflicted, but resilient group includes 1 (Christopher Plummer), a domineering war veteran; 2 (Martin Landau), an aged inventor; 5 (John C. Reilly), a stalwart mechanic; 6 (Crispin Glover), a visionary and artist; and 7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave warrior.
There are at least several malevolent creatures up against this group; namely, the cat-skulled creature from the short film, a split-headed flying being that resembles both a bat and a manta ray in wing shape, and an insectoid creature with jointed legs and a pod-like body. (via imdb.com)

While exploring the “Interweb” this morning, I stumbled across this amazing video. I love the idea of seeing our everyday lives from a completely new perspective, which is what We Are Lancaster is trying to do.

Synopsis:
“What would the world be like from an underground perspective?”
SURFACE is an experimental film, exploring the emotional journey from an underground urban perspective. This ‘urban symphony’ transforms human actions and street objects into beats that harmoniously compose a grand audio and visual composition. The film emphasizes the ideas of ‘point of contact’, ‘human identity’ and notion of ‘live footprints’.
SURFACE is a part of UND-VIS, a thesis project for MFA Design and Technology, Parsons The New School for Design. UND-VIS : Under Vision Experiment; explores the new visual language of an unconventional perspective from below.

Call it trendy, call it indie, call it what you will. I know I’m not the only one who is excited that 500 Days of Summer is coming to Penn Cinema tonight. Of course, you should all check out First Friday before you hit the theatre.

I saw Silent Light (Stellet licht) at the Harris Theater downtown Pittsburgh on June 29.
It’s the most un-Hollywood film I’ve ever seen and to call it “slow” is an understatement. However, those 140 minutes of fidgeting and craving more dialogue, proved worth my while for the fantastic, surreal ending that still has me thinking.
Set in a Prussian Mennonite community in Northern Mexico, Silent Light follows a Mennonite farmer who is having an extramarital affair with another Mennonite woman. With little background on the affair, we quickly understand that love, sex, family and faith intertwine for all parties involved. In an opening and unforgettable scene, the farmer (played by an unprofessional actor) sits alone at his kitchen table and weeps.
In low-German with subtitles, director Carlos Reygadas cast many actors from the Mennonite community and non-professional actors were two of the lead characters, including the farmer. It’s hard to imagine any professional actor carrying out these roles, especially the farmer’s children and his mother who do not act or underact, but simply “are.”
Throughout the film, my curiosity of this particular Mennonite community–seemingly quite different from the conservative Mennonites I am more familiar with in Pennsylvania–distracted me from the film’s full power. A woman unfamiliar with Mennonites that I spoke with afterward described the film as a “poem.”
Silent Light tied with Persepolis in 2007 as Best Film at Cannes. Silent Light releases on DVD in September.

I am looking forward to viewing this film, as well as several others on this list.
