Last night I had the privilege of seeing ‘Objectified’ - a movie by Gary Hustwit, from ‘Helvetica’ fame. The film sparked some wonderful conversations, and a discussion led by a Vanderbilt sociology professor. Why do we have so much stuff? Why are people not satisfied with the stuff they have? Do we need more stuff because the stuff we have is inadequate, or because we are told that we need more stuff? Does stuff equal happiness?
Objectified describes itself like this: ‘Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.’
This beautiful film is definitely worth a look.

“The Sitting Machine” is a charming documentary that follows eight public school children and their teacher as they venture beyond standardized tests into a world of learning by doing. The project: to imagine, design and construct a full-size functional chair (a sitting machine) using only cardboard and glue. The film was produced by local filmmakers Paul Hunt, Julie Kauffman, and Jerry Greiner. The local premiere is Sunday September 13th, at Penn Cinema, at 2pm and 7pm. The filmmakers, students and teacher in the film will hold a Q&A session at both screenings on Sunday Sept. 13th.
Please contact producer Jerry Greiner at jerrygreiner@paonline.com, for more information.

Additional showtimes are Monday, September 14th through Thursday, September 17th at 2pm and 7pm each day. There are 200 seats available for each show — tickets are first-come, first-serve. “The Sitting Machine” was awarded 9th Best of 200 Films at the Philadelphia Film Festival. Reserve a seat at PennCinema.com.

I don’t know if either of these films will make it into our market. If they do I’ll be there, if they don’t I’ll drive to see them.
ADAM
Adam is a handsome but intriguing young man who has all his life led a sheltered existence — until he meets his new neighbor, Beth, a beautiful, cosmopolitan young woman who pulls him into the outside world, with funny, touching and entirely unexpected results. Their implausible and enigmatic relationship reveals just how far two people from different realities can stretch in search of an extraordinary connection. (via imdb.com)9
9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 (Elijah Wood), who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive. The conflicted, but resilient group includes 1 (Christopher Plummer), a domineering war veteran; 2 (Martin Landau), an aged inventor; 5 (John C. Reilly), a stalwart mechanic; 6 (Crispin Glover), a visionary and artist; and 7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave warrior.
There are at least several malevolent creatures up against this group; namely, the cat-skulled creature from the short film, a split-headed flying being that resembles both a bat and a manta ray in wing shape, and an insectoid creature with jointed legs and a pod-like body. (via imdb.com)

WALL-E is awesome. I’ve never wanted to hug sharp metal as much as I did during this film. Its definitely enjoyable by children and adults alike. Thanks to the Mayor’s Office of Special Events for running this great event. Next week’s movie is ‘What About Bob.’

If you’ve never seen Wall-E. Check out the trailer below.

One of my favorites, ‘Iron and Wine’ is playing a show at Messiah College, near Harrisburg, on September 12. They will be accompanied by special guest ‘Roman Candle.’ Last time I checked, there were still tickets available for $25. You can get them here.

Not only is Sam Beam awesome looking, his warm and introspective folk style builds an environment well worth entering. Below is a clip from Iron and Wine’s last concert at Messiah.
